Internet and social networks sometimes change and develop in a matter of months and are a characteristic of a new lifestyle. This applies particularly, of course, to end user devices such as MP3 players, smartphones, tablets, etc. Cars are part of people's living environment and here, too, customers are unwilling to accept restrictions on their lifestyle. As a result, aspects influencing customers' buying decisions are changing. The automotive industry is faced with the challenge of integrating new functionalities with the respective end user devices in vehicles. With all these new functionalities, however, customers cannot and will not accept any reduction in the high levels of reliability they have come to expect from their cars. Many devices and components in consumer electronics are frequently of outstanding quality and reliability in their field, so there is no fundamental technical reason why they cannot be used in the automobile sector. This present guideline brings together all previously known paradigms in the automobile sector into a list of questions covering an analysis of situations and risks where the use of consumer electronics is planned. Essential action to safeguard framework conditions can then be defined by all companies in the guidelines which they already have in force dealing specifically with risk management. The objective of these guidelines is to provide a fact-based starting point for entrepreneurial decision-making covering the use of consumer electronics in vehicles.
