This recommendation describes a procedure for testing the hydrogen brittle fracture sensitivity of highstrength and ultra-high-strength steel screws with diameters M5 - M24 and a free loaded thread length lth ≥ 1,2d.

Mechanical and physical properties of high-strength and ultra-high-strength screws are specified, for example, in DIN EN ISO 898-1, VDA 235-205, VDA 235- 206 (in preparation) and VDA 235-202. This recommendation can be applied analogously to geometries or properties that deviate from screws according to these standards or recommendations (e.g. notch specimens).

This recommendation does not provide any information on the suitability of high-strength and ultrahigh-strength screws for operational use. These must be coordinated with the user.
