For a broad application of additive manufacturing (AM) for the processing of customized metallic materials, especially for laser beam melting in the powder bed process, reproducible properties as well as the test methods required for quality assurance have to be described in the automotive industry. This recommendation deals with the determination methods of properties and characteristics of metal powders which are important for the automotive industry.

This provides the possibility of a generally applicable characterization as well as the harmonization of the test methods. The guide values given for different material classes serve as orientation for the user. The specification of a powder for specific applications (component, machine, parameters) must always be carried out individually by the user.
