The signal from a flame ionization detector (FID) can be used to indicate the content of hydrocarbons and their compounds in an atmosphere. The FID provides a signal proportional to the mass of organic compounds. If only the total amount of - organic compounds is of interest, the total hydrocarbon concentration (total HC) can be determined as a sum signal without prior separation procedures. This method is suitable for continuous measurements, especially on emission test chambers and in vehicle interiors.
