This VDA recommendation deals with periodically occurring surface shape aberrations. An evaluation method is described that recognizes periodic dominant characteristics in the surface itself, is calculating a specific ripple profile and is deriving characteristics from this.
In particular, for the determination of the ripple profile, the deviation into wavelength classes and the connected classification of the wavelength ranges into a grid with stepped nesting indices (boundary wavelengths) as proposed in DIN EN ISO 21920-3.
Through this, the method of dominant ripple enables the unambiguous detection and evaluation of the surface shape aberrations.
Experience exists with static and dynamic sealing surfaces.
