Marking of materials on vehicle components serves the purpose of returning them into the material circuit as mono-materials to the extent possible. They are prescribed in binding fashion for plastic and elastomer parts, including textiles, by the Directive 2000/53/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 2000-09-18 on End-of-Life Vehicles, article 8, and must be implemented as per Directive 2003/138/EC.
This VDA recommendation does not replace the necessary measures to ensure that manufacturers of vehicle components provide adequate information on dismantling, storage, and testing of reusable parts to the approved recyclers on request. It is rather meant to facilitate implementation.
Specifications for marking of component materials that are subject to other legislative regulations are not affected by this VDA recommendation.
