The VDA recommendation 291 describes the inter-face between an electronic brake pedal (eBrake-Pe-dal) and a by-wire brake system. Specifically, this VDA recommendation focuses on so-called true brake-by-wire brake systems. These systems are characterized by the absence of any mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the brake system, even in fallback scenarios. When the brakepedal and the brake system are sourced from different manufacturers, there is a need for coordination at the interface between the two components. This arises, among other things, from the fact that the processing of signals from the electronic brake pedal (eBrakepedal) happens within the brake system.
The goal of this VDA recommendation is to harmo-nize this interface to facilitate interchangeability be-tween the two systems. This increases efficiency in the development process. To achieve this, the es-sential requirements for both systems are described, and the responsibilities within such a development project are defined.
